...Anubis is a bit confused by it, though. He can't figure out where Malik's gone, and why there's someone else that never comes down.

[He sounds a little amused at recanting that bit of information. Though the mention of Malik is still enough to bother him, even with the fragment here.]

Well, I guess that's true. Scary, but true. [Harriet sighs, not really comforted by any of this, although she didn't expect to be.] Thank you, at any rate.

O-oi... I'm just doing it because Malik would be unhappy otherwise! That's all!

[The look on his face says otherwise. It seems he's as bad an actor as Malik is when it comes to this sort of thing...]

[So Bakura was taking care of Harriet and Anubis... He doesn't remember if he made him promise that or not, but he was thankful for that much, although his heart ached at the thought. It was easy to forget, being just this small fragment of a soul, but he knew the fondness that his main soul had for the animal and so it hurt him too.]

Whatever. [She was trying to be cool with that thank you, but he had to make a big deal out of even that. It's a little embarrassing. She doesn't want to be in this position!

...But he said that, and Malik didn't even say anything else. Harriet notices he's being a little quiet.]

Uh, you've gone pretty silent! Something on your mind?

Huh? [He looks up, seeming to rouse from his thoughts.]

No, I was just listening...and thinking. I'm not used to having people to talk to.

...huh? But don't you experience the same things Malik does?

He's a soul fragment, Harriet... He can send information back, but he doesn't really receive it from the main soul. Sometimes he'll pick things up, but generally... he exists alone here.

[obeytherod]

The only time I really receive information is when my main soul contacts me with that intent, otherwise it's...more feelings than memories.

Um... I guess that makes sense. [NOT REALLY......fuckin souls, how do they work.]

Think of it this way. It's like Malik's chopped a piece of it off and left it here. But it's connected by a thread, just the barest thing. Like a nerve ending that's almost completely severed. And through that, it can get occasional signals. Fear, joy, affection... like a lost limb still feeling sensation because the mind thinks it should.

Occasionally Malik comes back to check on it, which means it's getting information sporadically and only then. Otherwise... it's resting peacefully here, nestled in your soul.

[Harriet looks at the fragment as he describes it, and all she can think is that it sounds positively grotesque. I mean, "chopped off a piece" and "severed nerve endings"? What a terrible thing to do to yourself! Malik, you're really fucked up. Even if it's coming in handy now, she never liked having this thing inside of her.]

Well... I hope you're right and he'll take you back when this is over. I'm sure you'd rather not be here!

[or well. She hopes so. He does look kind of comfortable, but....]

If my main soul really is that damaged, then he'll have to take me back. I'm not needed in here anyway. He hasn't contacted me in a long time.

[He sounds pretty neutral on the whole thing.]

I've never known anyone try... as far as I always thought of it, soul fragmentation was a last-ditch effort that shouldn't be done on a whim. I've never managed to reclaim fragments of my own... but then, my soul isn't ordinary.

I can't get rid of the soul fragment inside of me; Malik definitely can't handle that thing going inside of him. But you might have a chance.

[That means Malik doesn't care to spy on her, she assumes. Good to know.

aaaand once again Harriet's getting a bit lost. What soul fragment in Bakura? But from the sound of it, these fragments aren't so easy to pass on.]

My soul's bound to the Ring, so that might be the reason why I can't take back mine. But like I said... I've never known an Item user try to take their soul fragments back. Generally they just assume it can't be done and ignore the possibility.

So I've got no clue if it's even doable or not. And the only person that might know isn't here.

[Not that I'd even ask him, he thinks, a little coldly. Even if he hadn't killed Shadi once already, they'd never gotten along. He'd kill him again if it were possible. Over... and over... His shoulders shake a little with suppressed laughter at the thought.]

Malik'll have to be my test subject on that front, it seems. And if it works, once we're out of here, he can track down the rest of them as well.

Ah. [that doesn't sound very good. Soul fragments seem like a pretty permanent thing.]

... Wait, track down the rest? How many fragments does he have?

...I didn't really keep count. [Just a hint of awkward, there.]

I'd estimate it's near triple digits, but considering I only met him a few months before you did, I'm not quite clear on it either. Could be fewer. Could be more.

That's what I meant by calling him reckless earlier.

...He's exaggerating! It's not that many.

[But it is a lot, and now he's paying for it.]

You can't even keep track of how many you have, and you're saying that?

It's not that hard to figure it out, I just don't have a number off the top of my head.

[While his voice is still low, there's an undertone of warning to it. Bakura, don't press yourself.]
