[OOC] Episode Guide and Analysis 1 (Incomplete)

This is a guide specifically to the Bakura-related scenes and episodes of the Yu Gi Oh! Duel Monsters anime, for both my quick reference, and that of anyone else who may be interested.

This will be done in comments, with a specific layout - the Episode Number and title, followed by separate threads for images and scripts, to lower strain on users. Each will also have a separate thread for my comments and notes, and any comments other people wish to put in. For episodes with separate Bakura scenes, I will be separating the thread into multiple comments per scene, to reduce image overload.

Anzu: But...
 [A noise from the bushes makes her jump and cower.]
Anzu: Ah!
Yugi: Anzu!
 [Jounouchi and Honda rush over to stand between her and the bushes.]
Jounouchi: Who is it? Show yourself!
Honda: If you don't, we'll come in!
 [Enter: Bakura. Everyone stares in surprise.]
Yugi: Bakura-kun?¹
Anzu: Ah, then-
 [Flashback of Episode 3]
Anzu: I wasn't imagining things when I saw you, right?
Jounouchi: You got on board too?
Bakura: Hm? Ah... un.²
Honda: We didn't run into you all this time...
Jounouchi: Is that right? Well... we now have another supporter, so let's be grateful.

SCENE CHANGE
 [Around the campsite, a few minutes later...]
Honda: What's this? Everyone brought their cards.
Jounouchi: I understand the feeling. After all, we are in the Duelist Kingdom.
Honda: Oh right!
Jounouchi: Yeah... In this island everyone put their hearts in their cards. [Laughter.] Just joking...
Bakura: Jounouchi-kun... What is the card you like the most?¹
Jounouchi: Of course, it's this one! From now on, I am the Flame Swordsman! [Jounouchi makes slashing gestures and attacking noises.]
Honda: I'm this one! Commander!
Anzu: Really, they're like kids...
Yugi: But what Jounouchi-kun said is true. Anzu, you too. What is the card you like the most?
Anzu: That's right... For me, it's this card.
Honda: Huh? Saint Magician?
Jounouchi: A weird woman that draws a lot of attention....
Anzu: Idiot!
Bakura: Yugi-kun, what is the card you like the most?
Yugi: Mine is surely Black Magician!
Anzu: Somehow, I understand a little of everyone's feelings. Having a card you like, gives you a feeling of believing in a duel.
Yugi: As my grandpa says... cards have a heart. And when you find the card's heart, the true duel can start. Bakura-kun, which card do you like?
Bakura: I like this one.
Yugi: The Change of Heart card?
Jounouchi: You like a weird card.
Bakura: Ah... Oh yeah, Yugi-kun.... Why not duel with me? Of course, we won't bet any star chips.
Jounouchi: Ah! Isn't that good, Yugi? Since we got in this island we just had serious duels.
Yugi: That's right! It would be good to duel without any pressure.
Bakura: How about you put your favorite cards in Yugi's deck?
Jounouchi: That's a good idea!
Honda: Yeah!
Yugi: All right! Then let's get the cards from everyone and build an original deck!

 [SCENE CHANGE: Duel Stump]
Yugi: All right! All the preparations are complete!
Anzu: Try your best, you guys!
Jounouchi: Yugi probably will win, but... Try your best too, Bakura!
Bakura: Un.

 [Bakura's expression darkens, his eyes narrowing. For a moment there is only a strange chiming sound to be heard.]

Honda: Hm?
Jounouchi: ...What?
Anzu: What's this sound?
Bakura: [Sound of cold laughter, though he isn't actually laughing. The scene pans down as the Sennen Ring materializes.]
Yugi: T-That is...

 [SCENE CHANGE: DARK REALM]
Jounouchi: W-what is this?
Yugi: This is a Dark Game!

 [The souls of all four of them are ripped out and sent into the cards. Interestingly, a familiar figure goes alongside...

The four of them collapse to the ground, empty shells.]

Yami Bakura: What complete fools you are. With this, the Sennen Puzzle is mine.

 [The Puzzle glows as he reaches for it, making Yami Bakura cover his eyes.]
Yami Bakura: Ugh...

 [Yami Yugi opens his eyes.]

Yami Bakura: What?
Yami Yugi: If it's a Dark Game, I'll be your opponent!
Yami Bakura: Heheh. I see you... other Yugi! I was waiting for you!

¹ Because they don't know him too well, most of his friends refer to him by his surname. However, because he's a classmate, they still use the honorific -kun to refer to him. Interestingly, Yugi is always "Yugi-kun" even to Bakura. I guess he's just that friendly.
² "un" is a very shy yes that isn't so much of a word as a noise of agreement.

This is the lead-in to the first duel between Yami Yugi and Yami Bakura. You Inoue's "crazy grandma" voice gives this a slightly surreal taste, but still comes off as far creepier than expected, considering the toning down of the anime. The subtle use of the Ring's chimes is helpful, as the music cuts off to emphasise the oddness of the sound.

Something interesting to note here is that the Ring appears to have gained the power to appear and disappear at will. This is tied into its later reappearance around Bakura's neck. Originally, the Ring was pretty useless when not being worn, but the anime makes it slightly creepier by making it able to get around on its own using this power.

Bakura definitely isn't known for his dueling. Or maybe it's just that Yugi is known to pretty much never lose?

I love how nobody thinks to ask why Bakura is skulking silently around the forest. Is he just known for creepering?

Though Yami Bakura seems surprised to see Yami Yugi, he apparently expected him to show up. This is a bit of a change from the equivalent fight in the manga, where Yami Bakura really seemed more surprised at the other Yugi existing.
